Oddments and Snippets

and so it continues...

I bought this bobbin-type thing a long time ago -
I walked into the local antique store to see what was what and there it was, just inside the door

it leaped off the table, into my hand, and straight into my heart

last week, in my fit of organizing, I wrapped some burlap around the centre and then
some of my favourite fragments of lace

all secured with beaded pearl-topped pins

I love the metal wrapping on the ends.
it's all worn and dented, banged up from years of use as a...

haven't a clue - no idea what life it lived before it came to live in my sewing room,
but what a retirement it has now; a harbour for old lace.

I think I like this kind of organization

which is a good thing as the closet is next on the list...
but then again, tomorrow is May, and a new month means a new word

I'm mulling over "procrastinate"
it has a nice ring to it...

after I tidied, I played a while in Photoshop
I love what that girl does with a photograph!

everything looks pretty when it's misty
and whether or not the picture's in focus is unimportant!

below you'll find pictures of a beautiful gift I received from Tina @ Tinybear Studio

Tina's been playing lately with snippets
snippets of fabric, snippets of lace, snippets of embroideries
bits of thread, oddments of cloth

I think they're adorable and she sent me the prettiest one!

you really must go and see all the wonderful things she has made with the tiniest bits of magic
I promise you'll be inspired!

I was so inspired that I have chosen

snippets

as my word for May

I guess this means the closet is still next on the list

humbug is another good word

Angel Wings and Pretty Things

So a bird pooping on you is good luck huh?
I would never have thought...

but then, this arrived in the mail

along with a bigger pair and some other goodies
all from my friend Shell at The Raspberry Rabbits

I've never done anything with wings
but my mind is already whirring
they are so fantastically gorgeous, I want whatever I do to be special

she also added in some lace

the middle one reminds me of pom poms but they aren't free-floating, they're attached
and other beautiful trims
I am in my glory

and below you can see what I did with the cigar box I found on the fateful day

I had all sorts of manila tags I had tea and coffee dyed  long ago
so I spent an hour or two wrapping all manner of ribbons and lace and trims
now I can flip through the rows and easily find what I'm looking for

slowly, slowly I am organizing my things in a manner that not only pleases me visually, but also works in a very practical way

and that's my word for April
"organize"
it's a working word, not lofty, not lyrical, nothing you would write poetry about

but it's a thing I need to focus on

Somethings to Crow About

hello out there!

sometimes I wonder if you're all still there, or if you've given up on me, thanks to my sporadic posting of late.... sigh....busy, busy days...
my list is getting shorter though and I have only two "have to do"s left

my other list, the "want to do"s is getting awfully long and I have finally taken to writing things down (now that I am learning to sketch!) in the hopes the ideas can be saved until there's a little more time

in the meanwhile, here's a look at what's been keeping me occupied lately...

Deb of The Mosaic Magpie and I decided a while back to do a little swap, just between us

I was admiring her wonderful pebbles, and she was admiring my "Frothy" book....
so we agreed I would a book for her and she would make a pebble for me

her book is on it's way
so now I can give a sneak peek

except what you're seeing is mostly photographs of a book I made for myself!

i found out early on in meeting Deb that she also had a "thing" for Coco Chanel
which became the theme for the book I wanted to make her
and I thought it would be nice to make one for each of us; twins, but not identical

the fabric on the front cover is fringed in deference to the fringe on Chanel's iconic jackets

the spine detail features a vintage French key,  vintage sewing notions, pearl buttons and vintage crystal buttons, all relating to garments

Chanel and her pearls,
with some other bling for good measure

did you know she was the first to combine gems with costume jewelery to create stunning, affordable necklaces, bracelets and earrings?

the first to offer a gift with purchase?
(Chanel No. 5 parfum vials to regular customers before the perfume was available for sale)

papers in black, pink, grey, taupe
vintage laces
plaster pages

vintage French woven ribbon

and lots more!

so this is my book - Deb, yours is on it's way!

speaking of mail, I was the lucky recipient of a little package from Sherry at Creatology

she made a little heart like the ones I showed several posts back
except Sherry made it smaller still and I am loving this tiny size

and it's filled with the heavenly scent of lavender

and several weeks ago, I won a collage from Suzy at Suziqu's Threadworks

beautifully wrapped

i love, love, love this doily!

Suzy used the same image on the card as she did on the collage

I've never seen anything like this - so beautiful, and rich in detail
Suzy is a master at this, just look at her blog and you will see...

"embrace love"

Suzy, it's simply beautiful and I love it.
Thank you for such a generous gift!

the last thing I have to crow about is crows

today I was going to my favourite antique shop in search of a wooden box
when, walking down the alley, I felt something hit me on my shoulder
I thought it was a June bug or something and when I reached up to crush it off....
no bug...

the nasty crow pooped on me!
I looked up and there he was, perched on the wire, squawking and fussing,
while down below I took care of the fuming
bloody bird!
I did find a wooden cigar box just the right size - Thursday I'll be back to show you what I did with it

The Big Picture

I want to thank each of you that left such special, thoughtful comments on my last post
you are as inspiring and dear to me as Colleen
and I thank you for your comfort - it truly helped

if we're lucky in our life, we meet those special someones
and I've been lucky enough to meet a few

and much as leaving my home and my friends was the hardest thing I have ever done,
if I hadn't, there are dear ones I wouldn't know

there's a special lady I met here
who is a great champion of mine
and she's having a special gathering of her own dear friends
friends who have forged a special bond over the years
and I wanted to make her something special...

that started with various papers
covered with paint

 book paper silhouettes

these ladies love their clothes -
so dressing them was a big challenge

but a fun one!
have you ever worn leopard print???

layers of paint and paper

glue it on, paint it over, peel it off
start again

 oh, what to wear!

shoes and headbands...
accessories are as important for paper dolls as they are for real ones

in collage less is not more,
and more is best

and the perfect paper can do the work for you

four friends that have gathered together for many years,
sharing and caring

best friends

this has been, without a doubt, the most difficult thing I have made in many, many years
but it's most definitely been the most gratifying!

I still look at it and see it for what it isn't...
you know - when you look at the blank canvas and your mind's eye sees it wonderfully finished
and the reality is slightly different

but oh, what fun it was!
