And the Winner Is...

So we're sitting at the table after dinner and I pull up Monday's blog post to see how many comments there are for the give away. Twelve. So I ask DH to pick a number from 1 to 12, both of which can be included.
Six, was the immediate response, no hesitation. I should have known, as six has always been his favourite number (his bd is June 6 so it's kind of a no-brainer in our house.) Fair enough, 6 it is.

I scroll through the comments and lo and behold, the sixth commenter is none other than our own darling daughter Laura. (I refer to her that way all the time, as my dad did with me!) How do you like that?

And since fair is fair is fair, Laura, if you would like the ornament I will set it aside for you.

It's oddly fitting in a way, and when I tell you the story you will know why...

Years ago, when my Sale first started and it was all needlework, the kids and I had a little ritual. Once everything was made and set out, (as my friend and Manager Glenda says "When the last dog's hung") I would let Laura and Joey (not his real name, but that's for a different post) wander through the room looking at everything and when they had their fill I would let them each pick out an ornament to add their own collection. Sometimes they knew from watching me work what they would choose, and other times they would have to peruse it all first before they could decide. In the end, they both have a far better collection of my work than I do, and for that I am glad. A legacy if you will, from my hands to their hearts.

I remember when I posted this ornament as an Artful Thursday project that she emailed me after and told me she thought it was beautiful, and so "me".

Perhaps it's fitting after all, as she couldn't be here to look for herself, in her pyjamas, all scrubbed and clean from her bath, with her hands behind her back, looking to find the best ornament for her very own.

I love you sweetie!

p.s. Make sure you come back next Monday for another Give Away...

This is going to be a long comment... bear with me!

So I opened up Blogger and saw that you had new post, but I could only read the first few sentences (namely that DH was picking a number between 1 and 12). While I was waiting for it to load in a new window, I said to Steve, "I guarantee he picks 6. He always picks 6." Imagine my surprise (or not, haha) when he did and it was ME! Especially because when I left that comment, I wasn't meaning to enter your contest so much as I was meaning to be a brat!

I remember very well the tradition of picking out a new ornament each year, especially the bit about our hands being behind our backs. That needlework is just so WHITE! I also remember thinking if I tried a sample of your rum sauce I would instantly become "drunk". The mind of a 5 year old is a wonderful thing!

I look forward to collecting this treasure though I do feel a wee bit guilty. Can I donate a batch of holiday cookies for one of your upcoming giveaways to make up for it?!

Jillayne, how wonderfull your daughter won this beauty-even more with the story behind, it should really be hers---and I see she even wants to make up for this...well, that is not nessesarely-as long as she loves her mothers pretty work-that is enough,-and I`m sure she does.
Hugs, Dorthe

Oh Jillayne, I think it is fate that Laura should be the one to get your beautiful ornament! It has found it's perfect, forever home being treasured by your daughter. And Laura, don't feel guilty, your tree insight made me laugh out loud! Deb

Laura,
It is only fitting that you should receive this lovely example of your mother's work. Another ornament to add to your collection of heirlooms. I decorate my tree with ornaments my grandmother and mother have made. When I get the tree together I will do a blog post and your mother can send you the link. Again, Congratulations, now all of us are going to try to be commentor #6!!!

This is a story that tugs at the heart strings because we all remember those times. All bathed and new pajamas for Christmas. Isn't it nice to have these memories?

I think it was meant to be that your daughter won it and it is a very nice ornament at that. I think we all would like to have it.

Hugs
